But if it’s your first time, Patong nightlife can also be a little overwhelming. There are a few things worth knowing before you jump into the crowd, from choosing the right places to avoiding some common first-timer mistakes.
Here’s what I wish I knew before my first night in Patong.
Bangla Road - What to Expect
Bangla Road is loud, chaotic, colorful and full of surprises. Once the sun goes down, the street transforms into the heart of Patong’s nightlife, with neon lights, music, bars, street performers and crowds everywhere.
You’ll be approached by promoters, invited into bars and surrounded by all kinds of entertainment. Some places are relaxed and fun, while others can get pretty intense. Expect noise, crowds, higher prices than elsewhere in Phuket, and plenty of people trying to get your attention.
The best way to enjoy Bangla Road? Don’t rush, don’t take every offer seriously, and keep an eye on your belongings. Walk around, take it all in, and choose where you spend your time instead of letting the street choose for you.
Top Clubs to Check Out
Backpacker Bar
Looking to meet other travelers before heading into the night? This is the place to be. Backpacker Bar has a relaxed atmosphere where travelers from all over the world come together, grab a drink, and make new friends. When I visited, I ended up heading out for the night with a group of 12 people — and everyone was from a different country. That’s exactly the kind of spontaneous experience that makes places like this worth checking out.
Illuzion
Looking for an unforgettable night at one of Phuket’s most famous clubs? If you want big parties, impressive shows, and DJs from around the world, Illuzion is the place to be. I visited with a larger group, and it turned into a seriously fun night with a great atmosphere. One thing that might surprise you if you’re coming from Europe: smoking inside the club is still quite common, so don’t be surprised if you see people lighting up on the dance floor.
The Star Bar
Looking for a more laid-back night out? The Star Bar is the place I’d recommend. With live music and a genuinely welcoming vibe, it’s a great spot to slow down and enjoy the evening. There are no bar girls or people approaching you with offers, so you can simply relax, listen to live music, and enjoy your drink in peace. I’ve been here many times, usually just relaxing with a Tiger beer in my hand and enjoying the atmosphere.
Common First - Timer Mistakes

Always check the price before you buy a drink or anything else. Prices can vary a lot from place to place, and this applies to more than just bars — especially when buying something outside places like 7-Eleven. A quick price check can save you from an unpleasant surprise later.
Accepting the First Offer
Don’t feel pressured to accept the first offer you get. Whether it’s a drink, a bar, a service, or something on the street, take your time and see what other options are available. A friendly “no, thank you” is always enough if you’re not interested.
Drinking too Much
It’s easy to get carried away when the night is just getting started, especially with cheap drinks and a great atmosphere. But remember that you still have a whole night ahead of you, so take it easy and drink some water along the way. You’ll enjoy the night much more if you can actually remember it the next day.
Going Alone
Patong is easy to explore alone, but going out with a few people can make the night even more fun. You’ll meet travelers from all over the world, so don’t be afraid to start a conversation or join a group. Sometimes the best nights are the ones you never planned.
Tips to Enjoy Like a Pro
